Quantum Just Got a $125M Federal Vote of Confidence — And a Chicago Footprint. Here’s the GovCon Angle.

Published 2026 | TIKC NewsWire

On July 22, 2026, PsiQuantum announced a $125 million expanded agreement with DARPA under the Quantum Benchmarking Initiative (QBI) — the company’s most valuable U.S. government award to date. Pair it with last month’s federal post-quantum cryptography mandate, and a clear picture emerges: Washington is now spending real money on quantum — on both the “build it” and the “defend against it” sides of the equation.

What the Deal Is

It’s a performance-based agreement funding the testing and validation of PsiQuantum’s utility-scale, fault-tolerant hardware designs. PsiQuantum is one of only two companies to reach QBI’s final Stage C. DARPA’s QBI director has said it now seems likely someone builds a utility-scale quantum computer by 2033.

The Chicago Angle

The work funds facilities in Milpitas, California and Chicago, Illinois, where PsiQuantum is the anchor tenant at the Illinois Quantum and Microelectronics Park (IQMP). For Illinois-based firms, a federally-backed quantum campus is a supply-chain and services magnet — construction and facilities, cryogenics, cleanroom support, secure logistics, and workforce all cluster around a build like this.

Where Small Firms Actually Fit

Federally-funded programs like this pull in exactly the scopes small firms provide: specialized construction and facilities, cryogenic and photonics support, testing and measurement, secure logistics, and IT and security services. The firms watching where federal tech dollars flow are the ones positioned when the subcontracts open. Brick by brick.

FAQ

Is the full $125 million guaranteed?

It’s a performance-based award tied to testing and validation milestones under QBI Stage C.

Does this help my business today?

Directly, if you’re in the quantum or photonics supply chain or near the Illinois campus. Strategically, it’s a strong signal of where federal technology funding is heading — useful for anyone positioning capability statements toward modernization work.
